A one-way bearing clutch—also known as a freewheel or overrunning clutch—is a mechanical device that transmits torque in a single direction while spinning freely in the opposite direction.

How It Works

• Free Rotation: When rotating in the allowed direction, internal rolling elements (like needles or asymmetric sprags) move into a wider pocket or ramp, letting the races spin smoothly.
• Locking Action: When rotation reverses, the elements wedge tightly against the inner and outer races through friction, instantly locking the assembly to transmit torque.
• Spring Support: Small springs or cage designs maintain light contact between the rollers and races for instant engagement.

Common Types

• Roller Clutches: Uses cylindrical rollers inside ramped pockets; highly robust and great for heavy-duty applications.
• Sprag Clutches: Uses cam-like, non-revolving "figure-eight" shaped elements that tilt and bind under reverse torque.
• Needle Roller Bearings: Drawn-cup shell units that save space and combine bearing support with a one-way clutch function
