Joint rod end are classified into different series based on their design, materials, intended application (e.g., commercial, aerospace), and dimensional standards (e.g., metric, inch). There isn't a single universal "main series" as different manufacturers use proprietary designations that often cross-reference to industry standards.

Joint Rod End Common Series Designations and Types

Manufacturers often use letter-based series names, which vary by manufacturer but can be grouped by the design and material used:

SA/SI Series Joint Rod End (Metric Self-Lubricating): These refer to self-lubricating rod ends, often with a PTFE liner or similar composite, which are maintenance-free. "SA" typically indicates a male thread, and "SI" indicates a female thread. These align with ISO 12240-4, dimension series E, EH or K.
PHS/POS Series (Greasable, requiring maintenance): These are greasable rod ends, typically with a bronze race insert and a lubrication nipple. "PHS" is a common designation for male thread, and "POS" for female thread, primarily in metric sizes.
HM/HF Series Joint Rod End (Precision/Aircraft Grade): Popularized by RBC Heim, the HM (male) and HF (female) series are precision-grade, four-piece metal-to-metal designs using brass race inserts for clearance control. Variations like HME/HFE use a PTFE liner for self-lubrication. These are often used in commercial and military aviation applications and meet military specifications like SAE-AS81935.

CM/CF Series Joint Rod End (Commercial/Industrial): These are economical options for industrial use, often two-piece, metal-to-metal construction, with CM (male) and CF (female) designations. They are common for light to heavy-duty motion transfer applications.
JMX/JFX Series Joint Rod End (Heavy-Duty): Often three-piece designs (housing, ball, and race), the JMX (male) and JFX (female) series are heavy-duty, used in applications like off-road racing due to their robust construction.
XM/XF Series Joint Rod End (Loader Slot): These rod ends use a "loader slot" design for assembly, often with an injection-molded nylon or reinforced polymer race containing PTFE for self-lubrication.
BEM/BEF and BRM/BRF Series (Integral Bearings): These series feature an integral spherical plain bearing (BEM/BEF) or self-aligning ball bearing (BRM/BRF) for high load capacities and shock resistance.
