Thrust roller bearing plates working principle

Thrust roller bearing plates refer to the ability to obtain high axial loads and stiffness in a small space. The thrust roller bearing plates consist of a flat cage component with a needle or cylindrical roller and a flat washer.

Thrust roller bearing plates, like radial bearings, establish liquid friction of lubricating oil, but the formation of liquid friction between two surfaces requires three conditions:
1. A wedge-shaped gap should be formed between the two surfaces.
2. There must be a sufficient amount of lubricating oil with suitable viscosity between the two surfaces.
3. There should be sufficient relative motion speed between the two surfaces
Once these three conditions are met, liquid friction can be formed, which is commonly referred to as the establishment of an oil film.

Let's talk more specifically about the thrust roller bearing plates. The structure of the thrust roller bearing plates is to install several thrust pads on the front and back sides of the inference disk.
On the generator side, we generally refer to it as the working pad, which mainly bears the forward axial thrust, while on the other side, we refer to it as the non working pad, which mainly bears the instantaneous reverse thrust that sometimes occurs. There are two ways to support the thrust pad on the tile frame. One type is a fixed type, where the thrust pad quickly scrapes the pad surface into a wedge-shaped gap; Another type is called swing type, which is supported on the tile frame by an eccentric rib. After the turbine rotates, the lubricating oil rotates with the thrust disc and enters the gap between the thrust disc and the pad. When the rotor generates axial thrust, the oil layer in the gap is subjected to pressure and transmitted to the thrust pad. Due to the eccentric support of the thrust pad, the force is deflected, forming a wedge-shaped gap with the thrust disc. In this way, the first condition has also been met. Liquid friction can form it. There is no clear distinction between the thrust pads in operation and the working face (except for the maintenance zero position). It mainly depends on which direction the total axial thrust of your unit is facing, that is, the side that bears the thrust is the working surface, and the other side is the non working surface. We can judge from the temperature of the non working surface thrust pad during operation, and the side with high temperature is the working surface that bears the main thrust.
